Nick Stark

Hickory, Charlotte & Columbia Attorney

Nick was born and raised in Loveland, CO, a small city an hour north of Denver.  In high school, he worked in the kitchen of a locally owned restaurant.  On the first day after graduation, he started a second job on the “grounds crew” at Colorado State University where he was enrolled to start classes later that summer. For the first few years of Nick’s undergraduate experience, he was working sixty hours a week and majoring in microbiology.  Unable to devote enough time to his education, he started a job on the weekend shift at a Wal-Mart Distribution center and changed his major to Political Science. At Wal-Mart, Nick made several lifelong friends.  And it was while he was out with those friends one night in late 2002 that he met the wonderful woman that would become his wife.  They were married in 2006 and welcomed their first child 2007.  Shortly thereafter, with an interest in public finance, Nick registered to take the GRE so he could obtain a master’s degree in finance.  But those plans were abruptly derailed. In September 2007, Nick suffered a work-related injury to his back while at Wal-Mart.  Nick’s workers’ compensation claim was denied by Wal-Mart, and it would take two court dates, nearly dying from a medication induced bleeding ulcer, and almost two years before he received a penny in benefits.  In 2011, frustrated, angry, and motivated to help others who have been hurt at work, Nick and his wife packed up a U-haul and moved 1,600 miles east to Charlotte, NC.  So at 33 years old, he could start law school (their 4 year old flew out four days later with her grandparents). In law school, Nick focused on employment law and workers’ compensation and completed an independent study on the origins of workers’ compensation and its current application. After graduating from law school Nick began working at the Bollinger Law Firm for Bob Bollinger, a Board Certified Specialist in workers’ compensation and his associate Chad Winebarger.  Through their mentorship, Nick learned not only the intricacies of the law, but how to be a lawyer and an effective advocate for injured workers.  It was also during this time that he honed his legal writing through the drafting of countless motions, numerous contentions (briefs to a Deputy Commissioner), briefs to the Full Commission, and nine appellate briefs to the North Carolina Court of Appeals. After seven years at the Bollinger Law Firm and with the birth of his second daughter, Nick joined a firm in Rock Hill, SC that had a very active SC workers’ compensation practice so that he could develop the skills to represent injured workers in SC, in addition to those he had been representing in NC. In 2023, Nick jumped at the opportunity to join the Law Offices of Jason E. Taylor as the firm’s workers’ compensation attorney. Nick and his wife celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2022 and they have two daughters.  They enjoy spending time at the beach, in the mountains, or at the zoo.  Nick is a herpetologist that has worked with more than eighty species of reptiles and successfully bred forty-one of them.  Nick also enjoys cooking and baking with his daughters and watching the Colorado Avalanche.
