A man has passed away after a car accident in east Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. On Sunday, August 6th, Just before 2:30 a.m., officers were called to Albemarle Road for a car crash.
At the scene of the accident, police found a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta with severe damage to the front of the car and a 2014 Dodge Ram with damage to the passenger side. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
According to police, the driver of the Dodge Ram was a 40-year-old named Jesus Lopez Garcia. He was driving west on Albemarle Road and was trying to make a U-turn onto Farm Pond Lane. Officers say Garcia had a yellow caution arrow in his lane of travel. While attempting to make the U-turn, he was hit by 28-year-old, Marcario Torres, who was the driver of the Jetta. The front-seat passenger in the Jetta was 36-year-old Heriberto Patino Maldonado, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department also says that both drivers were found to be driving while impaired, which was another cause of the crash. The driver of the Volkswagen, Torres, was charged with; No Operator’s License, Operating a Motor Vehicle with No Headlights, Reckless Driving, Possession of an Open Container in a Motor Vehicle, and Felony Death by Motor Vehicle.
Officers charged the driver of the Dodge, Garcia with Failure to Yield the Right of Way, No Operator’s License, Possession of an Open Container in a Motor Vehicle, and Felony Death by Motor Vehicle.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
