Fatal Pender County, NC Car Accident Claims Woman’s Life, Several Others Seriously Injured

Fatal Pender County Car Accident, NC Claims Woman’s Life, Several Others Seriously Injured

The multiple vehicle accident that took one woman’s life and shut down a highway in Pender County happened at 1:59 p.m. on Thursday, on Highway 117 between East Main Street and Newroad Avenue in St. Helena located south of Burgaw. Five vehicles were involved in the crash including a Pender EMS ambulance.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a vehicle drove over the left of the centerline hitting the ambulance. The third vehicle was struck by debris from the initial vehicle crash hitting the ambulance. A fourth and fifth vehicle behind the ambulance swerved off the road into a ditch to avoid the collision.

A total of 12 drivers and passengers were involved. As of late Thursday evening, four people were taken to the hospital, two people were in critical condition and one was severely injured. Eight people were treated at the scene of the incident. 

A 54-year-old woman named Lynnette Smalley of Jacksonville, North Carolina passed away. A representative from Pender EMS & Fire has stated that both crew members involved in the accident have been taken to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center for medical attention. They are currently receiving treatment for their serious injuries.

No charges have been filed yet but are imminent according to the highway patrol.
