There was a major crash on Tuesday, August 15th on Interstate 40 westbound near the Streets at Southpoint. The road was closed for hours. The incident was reported to state police at approximately 4:44 p.m. The major crash was in part, due to the severe weather. The storms also caused other roads around the area to close due to downed trees and powerlines.

The crash involved 32 vehicles and closed traffic between Exits 274 and 276.Near the Fayetteville Road and Streets at Southpoint exits. Many vehicles were trapped in the aftermath of the crash for many hours.

All lanes were open around 8:30 p.m. At this time it is unclear what specifically caused the first crash and the wrecks that followed. One of the many crashes involved two vehicles stuck under a trailer of a tractor-trailer. One lane over, 11 cars appeared to be stuck after a chain-reaction wreck.

It is confirmed that none of the drivers or passengers in 18 of the 32 vehicles involved were seriously injured. As far as the other vehicles go, there didn’t appear to be any serious injuries.
